Port Aransas Deep Sea and Bay Fishing Report

  • 6/28/04 – Offshore General – 8 hr trips remain steady with average numbers of Kings and Snapper daily. A few Dorado and Ling mixed in. Inshore temperature breaks still productive. Blue water trips are still hot with Billfish. The Masters Tournament over the weekend produced several Blue Marlin and Sailfish releases. Several good gaffer size Dorado, and Tuna were also brought in. One Yellowfin to 172.5 lbs!
  • 6/28/04 – TEMPTATION - Capt. Matt Haworth - Steady week on Kingfish, Snapper, Shark, and the occasional Ling on the shorter trips. Dorado and Hoo on the longer trips. 
  • 6/28/04 – MUY CALIENTE – Capt. Keith Schoolcraft - Limits of Kingfish, Snapper, and Shark throughout the week. Also picked up a few nice Dog Snapper and Warsaw Grouper. 
  • 6/28/04 – HIGH BID – Capt. Aaron Chambers – Limits of Kingfish for 6 on Saturday, along with Limits of Red Snapper. Getting ready for an overnighter Tues.
  • 6/28/04 – TROPIC STAR – Capt. Scott Andrews – A little rough on Fri, but steady fishing. Picked up 3 Kings, 3 Cudas, 14 Snapper, and missed many more. Had one Kingfish attacked and cut in half  by Cudas right at the Boat. Kings and Snapper on Saturday out at the rocks.

  • 6/28/04 – BACKLASH – Capt. Ron Melvin - Tagged a Shark, caught a few Kings and Snapper out at Double Yellow.
  • 6/28/04 – JUST 1 MORE – Capt. Frank Eicholz – Fishing a little spotty this week. Trout fishing best along the edges of Dagger, Quarrantine, and Ransom. A few Reds still holding in the flats.
  • 6/28/04 – C&L ADVENTURES – Capt. David Hein – Steady on keeper trout this week, although a little more traveling required.
  • 6/28/04 – HOP A LONG – Capt. Lloyd Dreyer – 3 Keeper Trout on Sat, many others during the week. Several releases. Fishing a little slower this week with the heavy rains. A few nice Redfish mixed in.
  • 6/28/04 – MARSHALL’S GUIDE SERVICE – Capt. Monte Marshall – Trout are scattered, but if you’re lucky enough to find ‘em its a good bite. 17 on Saturday. Live piggies and Croaker working best. Reds also at end of jetties using piggies and cut mullet. 
  • 6/28/04 – BIG M CHARTERS – Capt. Marvin Engel – 11 Trout, but a little spotty. Good bite around Ransom, Steadman, and Dagger with Croaker.


  • 6/21/04 – Offshore General – Several reports of Billfish this week. Numbers of Sailfish have been released inside of 30 miles. Blues are still hot from Baker to Falcon and Dutra. Weeldines and temperature breaks are holding around 30 – 50 fathoms. Plenty of Wahoo and Dorado picked up along those lines.
  • 6/21/04 – TEMPTATION - Capt. Matt Haworth – Jumped a White Marlin early in the week, and picked up a few Wahoo and Amberjack. Several large AJ’s on Saturday, along with many big Barracuda. Sunday Shark fishing caught an estimated 100lb Hammerhead, a few nice Kingfish to 25 lbs, and some Snapper.
  • 6/21/04 – HIGH BID – Capt. Randy Prichard- Steady on limits of Snapper and Shark. A ling almost every trip, along with some nice Kingfish. Sunday picked up a nice Sailfish on a ribbonfish!
  • 6/21/04 – FINATIK - Capt. Mike Gibbs – Dropped our first baits a little inshore of Dutra about 2:00 p.m. Mon. Had a small white up in about 5 minutes and failed to get a hook in him. Lots of bait on the bottom machine and a big humpback whale but not
    a sigh of another fish. Talked to two other boats in the area with no bites so picked up and headed offshore about 6. Found a huge matt of grass about 12 miles east of Dutra. Dropped 2 baits in and picked up a 30# dolphin and a blue estimated @ 375#. Arrived @ Diana at 2: a.m to solid tuna. No surface activity but filled our boxes easily. Largest yellowfin was 78#, 29#. Trolled ballyhoo at first light but could not stay away from the tuna so we switched to lures and picked up a blue estimated @ 150# 


  • 6/21/04 – MUY CALIENTE – Capt. Keith Schoolcraft - 50 lb Ling Tuesday, and several limits of Snapper. Steady Kingfish, Sharks and Ling all week.
  • 6/21/04 – LOOKIN FOR ACTION – Jim Trebilcock  – Ran up to big red and tied up to do some bottom fishing. We only had about 2 hours to fish before we had to come back. The bite was surprisingly consistent, although there were a lot of undersized snapper we were able to keep a couple of limits. Had a drift line out that got hit hard twice. The second fish was a good sized sail that almost spooled the reel because we couldn’t get free from the rig. Got some good video and released him in good shape. The water really looked good, there was a rip running north and south right at 110’ of water, lots of weeds and activity. 
  • 6/21/04 – MAKAIRA – Capt. Jim Harmon – Big Kingfish limits this weekend. A few sharks, and a nice Ling!
  • 6/21/04 – MILLER TIME – Capt. Don Miller -20 Trout mid week trip. 10 of them over 20″!
  • 6/21/04 – C&L ADVENTURES – Capt. David Hein – some nice Trout on Saturday. Best luck free lining shrimp around the deep wells. 
  • 6/21/04 – JUST 1 MORE – Capt. Frank Eicholz – A little slower around Dagger, but picked up a few nice Reds over the weekend, along with a few Trout. The Trout bite on croaker around Estes seems to be steady. 


  • 6/14/04 – Offshore General – There is a bite on from the 26′s to Baker. Cooler water temps in this inshore area producing Billfish, Wahoo, and Dorado. Offshore of Baker good currents… now that the wind has come down, look for weedlines to tighten up. If you can get offshore.. go!
  • 6/14/04 – TEMPTATION - Capt. Matt Haworth – Steady Amberjack and limits of Snapper. Nice Wahoo on Saturday. 
  • 6/14/04 – HIGH BID – Capt. Aaron Chambers- Snapper and Shark limits all week, including Blacktips and Dog Snapper. A few Kingfish and several nice Ling up to 50 lbs! Grouper and Amberjack mixed in.
  • 6/14/04 – YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Gueldner – Sunday – Released a Sailfish, missed another. 8 nice Sow Snapper, a few Kingfish, a Ling, and 4 Amberjack.
  • 6/14/04 – FINATIK Capt. Mike Gibbs – Missed a Blue on Friday, picked up some nice Blackfin Tuna and Kingfish. Saturday sharks and a nice Ling.
  • 6/14/04 – MUY CALIENTE – Capt. Keith Schoolcraft – Sailfish on Saturday! A few Kingfish, and limits of some nice Snapper and Shark.
  • 6/14/04 – REEL EASY – Gene Ashley – Saturday released one Blue Marlin and pulled the hooks on another. One Yellowfin Tuna 37lbs. South Baker out to the 100 fathom curve.
  • 6/14/04 – MEAT HAUL – Capt. Mike Sullivan – Sunday released a Blue Marlin. 30 Fathoms!
  • 6/14/04 – MILLER TIME – Capt. Don Miller – Some nice Trout and a few Reds this week, and several undersize.
  • 6/14/04 – FISHING FEVER – Capt. Mark Rochester III - Slower fishing this week. A few nice Reds and Trout. Throwing Croaker for Trout, and a little bit of everything at the Reds to get that bite going!
  • 6/14/04 – JUST 1 MORE – Capt. Frank Eicholz – With little tidal movement Thursday had little success. 1 keeper. Friday things picked up with 5 slot and 1 oversize and countlees undersize Reds. 1 monster Drum..estimate 40-45 inches. Saturday was the day… kept nine slot reds 2 trout and 1 flounder. 
  • 6/14/04 – WOODHOUSE GUIDE – Capt. Ed Woodhouse – Catching some nice Trout out around Trailer Island . Best bait has been piggy perch. A few Redfish throughout the week.
  • 6/14/04 – C&L ADVENTURES – Capt. David Hein – 10 nice Specks on Saturday, several were over 24″. Catching them on the wells in east CC bay using shrimp and croakers. 13 specks, 3 reds and 2 bull gafftop on a half day trip Sunday. 


  • 6/07/04 – Offshore General – The 8 hr bite has slacked off a little, but still good limits of Snapper. 10 hr yielding more  Kings, Cobia, and Sharks. Deepwater MARLIN BITE IS ON!!! Reports of up to a dozen releases Saturday. White Marlin and Sailfish included. From Baker to the Breaks it sounds like the bait is plentiful right now. A few nice Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado brought in as well. 
  • 6/07/04 – HIGH BID – Capt. Aaron Chambers- Steady Snapper all week with limits most trips. Kingfish steady as well, along with Sharks. Released a big Spinner and Hammerhead. A few nice Ling mixed in.
  • 6/07/04 – TEMPTATION - Capt. Matt Haworth - 75 Lb. Spinner Shark, limits of Red Snapper, nice Ling 35lbs, and 5 Barracuda up to 40 lbs. A few Amberjack mixed in all week. 
  • 6/07/04 -  YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Gueldner - Limits of Snapper all week. Some nice Kingfish , and a few big AJs along with limits. Broke off several big ones over the weekend. 
  • 6/07/04 – FINATIK Capt. Mike Gibbs – 33 lb. Dorado and a few Blackfin Tuna over the weekend. 
  • 6/07/04 – CHEROKEE – Capt. Tray Clark – Released a White Marlin, missed a Blue, caught a 62 lb. Yellowfin, and 2 nice Dorado. Whales schooling out near 500 fathom hump.

  • 6/07/04 – DAYS GUIDE SERVICE – Capt. John Day – 3 Nice keeper Redfish in the morning, and limits in the afternoon. 
  • 6/07/04 – SANDPIPER GUIDE – Capt. Buddy Coker - Trout picking up! 12 on Saturday. Using Croaker outside Ransom and Dagger. 
  • 6/07/04 -  JUST 1 MORE – Capt. Frank Eicholz – Trout during the week and a few Redfish over the weekend, one Oversize. Live Shrimp working around the Flats and Quarantine.


  • 6/01/04 – Offshore General - South- Southeast wind has been kicking all week.. seas a little messy, but a steady bite inshore for Snapper, Shark, and a few more Kingfish showing up. Big Amberjack are still being caught in deeper water at the rigs while a few more Dorado are showing up as the weedlines develop. Report of a Blue missed out near the Breaks… time to start Billfishing!
  • 6/01/04 – MUY CALIENTE – Capt. Keith Schoolcraft - Limits of Snapper, 2 Ling (41 and 28 ponds), a King, a Sharpnose Shark, and a nice Dolphin (38 or 40 inches) on Saturday. Sunday- Limits of snapper, 6 kings, 2 Sharpnose, some triggerfish and a dog snapper (Grey). Also released several undersized Blacktips both days and Sunday fought a Big Hammerhead on Mono leader for 40 minutes before he bit through it!
  • 6/01/04 – TEMPTATION - Capt. Matt Haworth - Limits of Snapper and Big Kingfish on the short trips, one king to 44 lbs! A few Barracuda, and Ling. Released a Hammerhead approx. 135 lbs. Longer trips – Missed a Blue Marlin on Friday, caught a nice A.J.
  • 6/01/04 – HIGH BID – Capt. Aaron Chambers- Limits of Snapper and several Kingfish this week. One king to 48 lbs! Several Sharpnose Sharks and one 80lb. Blacktip.

  • 6/01/04 – WOODHOUSE GUIDE – Capt. Ed Woodhouse – Good bite with the Black Drum using live or dead shrimp. Redfish picking back up as the water cleans up. Catching a few Flounder in the Flats.
  • 6/01/04 – JONES CHARTERS – Capt. Mark Jones – Redfish on live shrimp near shore. Brackesh water making it a little more difficult. Big Trout on Monday using cut menheaden. 
  • 6/01/04 – SANDPIPER GUIDE – Capt. Buddy Coker – Redfish on cut mullet and menheaden. Best bite in the shoreline areas of the islands. Muddy water has ‘em scattered, but bite should improve as the wind and water settle out. 
  • 6/01/04 – FISHING FEVER – Capt. Mark Rochester III – Tougher fishing this week, but best bite has been on cut mullet and shad around California Hole and Estes. Wind finally starting to lay!
  • 6/01/04 – JUST 1 MORE – Capt. Frank Eicholz – Redfishing in the flats using live shrimp and mullet under bubble corks. Water finally starting to clean up a little. Catching an occasional Flounder and Trout. Catching school Trout along Quarantine shorline.

December 2003 Port Aransas Fishing Report

  • 12/01/03 – Offshore General - Same story, different month! Tuna if, if, if you can find a good Shrimp Boat to cull them up. With rips inshore as close as the rocks and water temperatures remaining in the mid to low 70′s, gamefish are still going to hang around. Never know when the Wahoo bite will turn on!
  • 12/01/03 – YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Gueldner – Tuna slowing a bit, butstill a few Blackfin coming in. A good blue/green rip at the rocks producing a few Dolphin.
  • 12/01/03 – FISHING FEVER – Capt. Mark Rochester III – Good fishing over the weekend, with Limits of Redfish and Black Drum both days. Hot bite around South Bay. 
  • 12/01/03 – WOODHOUSE GUIDE – Capt. Ed Woodhouse – Low tide producing Many many fish. Limits of Redfish and Drum fishing the cuts and channels.
  • 12/01/03 – Capt. Charles Bujan – Limits of Redfish and Black Drum. 50 and 60 pounds of fish over the weekend. Fishing remains good with the warm weather.
  • 12/01/03 – TRAY’S FLOUNDER TRIPS – Capt. Tray Clark – Limits of Flounder throughout the week!
  • 12/01/03 – KEENES FLOUNDER TRIPS – Capt. Gerry Keene – Many limits of Flounder since the last cold front. Sat – 3 limits avg. 5 lbs each – 150 lbs of flounder!! Many limits earlier in the week as well.
  • CRYSTAL BLUE CHARTERS – Capt. Clark Miles – Fishing very, very good this last week with limits of Redfish coming quickly, and a good number of Trout mixed in. One trip caught 8 Trout 20″ and larger!

August 2003 Port Aransas Texas Fishing Report

  • 8/25/03 -  Offshore General – Another beautiful weekend in Port Aransas. Calm seas, clear water, and a hot bite! Kingfish are still being picked up anywhere from the Standpipe to Hospital Rock. 8 hour trips still reporting plenty of limits of Snapper along with the occasional Tuna, Amberjack and Ling bite. Deeper water not finding much in the way of weedlines, but there is still plenty of bait. Boats out at East Breaks reporting numerous Pilot Whale and Whale Shark sightings. Several nice Dorado brought to the docks by boats fishing out beyond Baker, along with a few nice Wahoo. Several Sailfish and Marlin caught during the TWAT tournament over the weekend, all released. The Barbara C recorded a banner day on Thursday with 3 Blue Marlin, several Yellowfin Tuna, and many other shots at billfish. One other noteworthy fish hooked up by Get Reel was an estimated 800 Lb Blue Marlin that swallowed up a live baited Blackfin Tuna, but then let it go… 
  • 8/25/03 – SEAHAWK – Capt. Leon Seale – Limits of Kingfish over the weekend. Nice weather, calm seas. Good number of fish at the Rocks as well as inshore rigs. 
  • 8/25/03 – THE REBEL – Capt. Doug Hooker – Kingfish bite has been hot. Kings and Snapper out at the rock off Southern and inshore to the 26′s.
  • 8/25/03 – AMBUSH – Capt. Aaron Chambers -Good overall fishing week. A mixed bag of Amberjack, Snapper, a few Dolphin, plenty of Kings, and one nice Sailfish!
  • 8/25/03 – FINATIKCapt. Paul McKnight - Gorgeous day on the water. Wahoo and Blackfin out at Falcon.. No rips, but good bait and a few Whale Sharks!
  • 8/25/03 – QUITTIN TIME – Capt. Jim Holland – Kingfish everywhere! Limits for each day from Hospital to Aransas. Limits of Snapper as well.
  • 8/25/03 – MARSHALLS GUIDE - Capt. Monte Marshall – Huge schools of Redfish up to the hundreds. Scattered from Lydia Ann to C.C. Bay!

  • 8/25/03 – WOODHOUSE GUIDE – Capt. Ed Woodhouse - Calm water over the weekend making it difficult to sneak up on the schools. Plenty of Trout and a few more Blacktip Shark.


  • 8/18/03 – Offshore General – PLenty of Kingfish inshore along the jetty and at inshore rigs. On calm days Tarpon are visible rolling at the jetty along with activity from the Spanish Mackerel. Deeper water still producing a few Snapper, and a few Dolphin. More activity seems to be with the boats targeting the Amberjack and Tuna.   • 8/18/03 – JUST FISHIN OFF- Capt. Jay Belzeski / Golfito, Costa Rica60 Roosterfish released over the last week! Loads of Cubera Snapper, and still plenty of Sailfish. Marlin bite is getting hot as the Fall approaches. Weather is subject to some rain showers, but fish are here!!!
  • 8/18/03 – FINATIKCapt. Paul McKnight - Big A.J.s still out at Falcon. 5 nice 40# class fish brought in on Sunday, many others broken off. Water is clearing since the storm on Friday, a few weedlines looking to develop between Baker and Falcon.
  • 8/18/03 – YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Jo Gueldner – Kingfish are everywhere! Close in as the Standpipes. A few Ling scattered. Once the shrimpers get back to work, Tuna should be back in the bite.
  • 8/18/03 – AMBUSH – Capt. Aaron Chambers – Gorgeous weather on Sunday following the storm, Plenty of Kingfish and a nice Dolphin. Lots of current making fishing easy. No ill effects from Erika. 
  • 8/18/03 – THE REBEL – Capt. Doug Hooker – Kingfish and Snapper at inshore rigs. Calm enough on Sunday to take a quick dive down on one rig; discovered huge schools of Barracuda. Also released one Hammerhead Shark.
  • 8/18/03 – FISHING FEVER - Capt. Mark Rochester III - Redfish schools along Estes and Trout at Shamrock. Fishing still a little slow following the weather, but did hear of one captain catching many Reds at the Jetties with Croaker.
  • 8/18/03 – WOODHOUSE GUIDE – Capt. Ed Woodhouse – A few cancelled trips due to weather from the storm, followed by flat calm waters afterward. Tough stalking the schools of Reds in those conditions. Still catching Blacktip Shark up to 30″. Changing conditions suggest the fishing is just about to get hot again.
  • 8/18/03 – MILLER TIME – Capt. Don Miller -Erika making things a little tough over the weekend; a few reds and trout; fishing should improve with the weather stabilization


  • 8/11/03 – Offshore General – Got Wasabi? Tuna are here! With the shrimp season well under way, Tuna are showing up in better numbers around the boats dragging 30 miles plus offshore. Best results have been reported to the South when you can find multiple boats working close in one area, however, many Captains have also had good luck working the area on and around Hospital Rock. Many Blackfin are showing up at the dock along with Large Yellowfin mixed in. Deepwater out at Falcon still producing nice Amberjack and shots at Billfish. For those looking to bend a pole inshore, fishing has rekindled with Kingfish and Bonita thick anywhere from the Ships to Aransas. Many reports of Dusky, Tiger and Black Tip Sharks as well. Keep an eye on the movement of the water from the South. Strong currents pushing up cool currents along the 50 fathom curve region may bring us some of those conditions that helped the TIFT tournament produce a large number of Billfish. 
  • 8/11/03 – EL GATO – Capt. Butch Findley – Several nice Blackfin Tuna, loads of Bonita, and Kingfish. Shrimp boats to the South productive all day on Saturday.
  • 8/11/03 – SCREAMER – Capt. Buddy Harper – 5 nice Kingfish on Friday, Limits on Saturday. The Kings are in close with good signs of bait working.
  • 8/11/03 – GULFSTAR - Capt. Scott Andrews – TUNA! -  SEE PICS! Several nice Blackfin and Snapper on Thursday and Saturday and 5 Large Yellowfin on Friday. Best luck using chum to pull the tuna from the shrimp boats while dragging.
  • 8/11/03 – FINATIKCapt. Paul McKnight - Kingfish, Snapper and a Few AJ’s. Stopped to assist another vessel that was sinking. Hats off to Capt. Paul and Mate Peter for doing a little diving and patching up that hull. Go FINATIK!
  • 8/11/03 – VARMINT HUNTER – Capt. Erik Strand – Limits of Kingfish and Snapper over the weekend. Good fishing at Hospital area.
  • 8/11/03 – YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Jo Gueldner – Limits of Kingfish and a few nice Blackfin Tuna showing up everyday. Strong currents from the South along with spotty Shrimp boats.

  • 8/11/03 – JONES CHARTERS – Capt. Mark Jones - A little tougher to find the fish this weekend, but still good numbers and limits. Better afternoon bite.

  • 8/04/03 – Offshore General – Water conditions improving offshore. Clear and lots of current. Blue water in as close as 12 miles to the South if you don’t mind a little head seas. Kingfish are back around the ships, close rigs, and shrimp boats with many getting  shark bit on the way in! Snapper and AJ’s not as prevalent, but still out there. Deeper water shrimp boats are drawing in some Tuna and plenty of Bonita. The Billfish bite is good for those going Deep (100 Fathoms or More). Better plan on 12 Hr. minimum trip to get the most number of shots. Extremely hot bite over the weekend down off of Port Isabel for the T.I.F.T tournamnet. See the pictures and results below.

  • 8/04/03 – MARLIN BABE – Capt. Ron Pierson – A 64lb. Blacktip Shark, 20lb. Ling, 8lb. Dorado, 23lb. Kingfish & the rest of our Happy Anglers Limits of Kingfish (sone released), We “Quick” released a 80+ lb. Blacktip and had on an even “Bigger” one!

  • 8/04/03 – YELLOWFIN – Capt. Tommy Jo Gueldner – Still finding plenty of Snapper and Amberjack. A few nice Dorado and Blackfin Tuna showing up a the Shrimp boats. 
  • 8/04/03 – OUTRUNNER II – Capt. Fred Wright – Blackfin Tuna, Dorado, and Limits of Kings on Saturday. A few Tuna showing up around the Shrimp boats and at Hospital Rock.
  • 8/04/03 – THE REBEL – Capt. Doug Hooker – A little choppy offshore on Saturday, but still able to locate a few Kingfish, a few Kings bit off on the way to the boat, and a nice Ling around 25lbs!
  • 8/04/03 – MARSHALLS GUIDE - Capt. Monte Marshall – Typical August fishing, hit or miss. The bite can be early or late once you locate Schools of Reds. Still a few trout mixed in.
  • 8/04/03 – JONES CHARTERS – Capt. Mark Jones – Limits of fish quickly once you find them. The schools are spotty along Mud Island and East Flats.
  • 8/04/03 – SANDPIPER GUIDE SERVICE – Capt. Buddy Coker – Limits of Redfish all weekend. Find the schools and find the bite. Keep traveling till you find em!
  • 8/04/03 – SEIDELS GUIDE SERVICE – Capt. Randy Seidell – Water improving to the North. 40 Trout caught on Saturday, up to 7 lbs! 
  • 8/04/03 – FISHING FEVER - Capt. Mark Rochester III - 12 Redfish and a few trout on Saturday. Schooling Reds showing up a t California Hole and South Bay. Live finger mullet producing best results.
